Detox Programme

The physical first step, safely supervised, and what has to follow it.

A detox programme manages the physical process of withdrawal under medical supervision. It typically takes several days to a week depending on the substance. Road2Recovery coordinates medically supervised detox with qualified partners, then provides the structured 12 week outpatient programme that addresses the patterns underneath.

What a detox programme actually is

Detox is a medical process, not a therapeutic one. Its purpose is to get someone through withdrawal safely while the substance leaves the body. Depending on what is involved, that can take anywhere from a few days to a little over a week.

Withdrawal from alcohol and from some prescription medicines carries real physical risk, including seizures. This is not a process to attempt alone or at home on willpower. Supervision exists because the medical risk is genuine.

Why detox alone does not hold

Completing detox is a real achievement and it is also the beginning. Once someone is medically stable, every pattern, trigger and circumstance that led there is still in place, and nothing about the detox process has addressed them.

This is the most common reason people cycle through repeated detox admissions. The physical dependency is treated and the behavioural work never happens. Structured therapy afterwards is what changes the trajectory.

How we coordinate it

Road2Recovery is an outpatient practice and does not provide detox on site. Where your assessment indicates detox is needed first, we help coordinate it with qualified medical partners, so the handover from medical stabilisation into structured therapy is deliberate rather than left to chance.

Our GP and medical advisor is involved in that decision. You are not left to work out the sequencing on your own.

Who needs medical detox

Not everyone does. Whether detox is necessary depends on the substance involved, how long it has been used and at what level, and this is established at assessment rather than guessed at in advance.

As a general position, withdrawal from alcohol and from benzodiazepines carries the most serious physical risk and is where supervision matters most. Other substances produce withdrawal that is deeply unpleasant without being medically dangerous, in which case therapy may be able to begin sooner. A medical opinion should decide this, not an internet search.

What to expect

Supervised detox means clinical monitoring while withdrawal runs its course, with medication used where appropriate to manage symptoms and reduce risk. Symptoms typically peak in the first two to three days and ease from there, though this varies by substance and by person.

It is uncomfortable, and it is finite. Knowing roughly what the shape of it looks like beforehand makes it considerably easier to get through.

What follows

Once medically stable, the twelve week outpatient programme begins: twice weekly sessions in month one, weekly through months two and three, using cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing and relapse prevention. Sessions run in Crawford, Cape Town or online.

Moving straight from detox into structured therapy is what separates a lasting change from a cycle of repeated admissions. The handover is planned deliberately for that reason.

Common questions

How long does detox take?

Usually several days to a week, depending on the substance and level of dependency. Your medical assessment will give you a realistic expectation.

Do you provide detox at Road2Recovery?

No. We are an outpatient practice and coordinate medically supervised detox with qualified partners where it is needed.

Is detox dangerous?

Withdrawal from alcohol and some prescription medicines can carry serious physical risk, which is why medical supervision matters. Do not attempt it unsupervised.

What happens after detox?

The structured 12 week programme, which is where the patterns behind the dependency are actually addressed.
