Outpatient rehab means completing a structured treatment programme while continuing to live at home and work. Road2Recovery runs a 12 week outpatient programme in Crawford, Cape Town and online, with twice weekly sessions in month one and weekly sessions through months two and three, using cognitive behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing.

What outpatient treatment actually means
Outpatient treatment is structured therapy delivered on a fixed schedule while you continue living at home. It is not a lighter or less serious version of residential care. The therapeutic content is the same; what differs is that you apply it immediately, in the environment where it has to work.
The term covers a wide range in practice, from a monthly check in to intensive daily programmes. That variation is why the label alone tells you very little, and why the questions worth asking are about frequency, method and duration rather than the category name.
Why practising in real conditions matters
Residential care works partly by removing temptation. That is genuinely useful in the short term and it is also the reason the transition home is such a common point of relapse: the skills were built in an environment that does not resemble the one they now have to survive.
Outpatient treatment inverts that. The difficult dinner, the colleague who pours a second glass, the Friday that always went the same way, these arrive during the programme rather than after it, while there is still a session that week to work through what happened.
Who outpatient treatment suits
It works well where there is a stable place to live, some existing support, and no medical risk that requires supervision. Professionals and parents often choose it because a residential admission is difficult to explain and difficult to arrange around dependants.
It is not right for everyone. Where withdrawal carries physical risk, or the home environment actively undermines recovery, residential care or medically supervised detox should come first. Your assessment establishes that honestly, and we will say so plainly rather than enrol you at the wrong level of care.
The 12 week structure
Month one runs twice weekly and builds the foundation: an honest picture of the situation, the specific triggers involved, and the first practical tools. Months two and three move to weekly, shifting from building tools to applying them under real conditions.
Throughout, the work draws on cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing and relapse prevention. Family members can be involved where that helps. An aftercare plan is built with you before the twelve weeks end, with the same team rather than a handover.
Attending in Cape Town, or online
Face to face sessions run in Crawford, Cape Town. The full programme is also delivered online for clients elsewhere in South Africa and internationally, with the same structure and the same people.
For many people the online route is the reason treatment becomes possible at all, whether because of distance, work travel, or simply not wanting to be seen arriving somewhere. Everything is handled in line with POPIA and nothing is disclosed without your explicit consent.
Common questions
Is outpatient rehab as effective as residential?
For the right situation, yes. The therapeutic content is the same. What determines fit is medical risk and how stable your home environment is, which the assessment establishes.
How many hours a week does it take?
Two sessions a week in month one, then one a week through months two and three, scheduled around your commitments.
Will my employer need to know?
No. Nothing is disclosed to anyone without your explicit consent, and the schedule is designed to fit around working hours.
What if I relapse during the programme?
It is treated as information rather than failure. A difficult week is worked through in the next session, which is one of the practical advantages of treatment that runs alongside real life.
Can I switch to residential if I need to?
Yes. If your situation changes we will help you understand what to look for and coordinate with appropriate partners.
